Half-day workshops

Fairy Tale Workshop: The Three Little Pigs: An Architectural Tale (Grades K-3)

Based on the book, The Three Little Pigs an Architectural Tale, students will plan and construct the three little pigs’ houses. Using engineering principles, they will try to “save the pigs” from the wolf.

Urban Plan of DC: From Past to Present (Grades 5-8)

Learn about L’Enfant’s urban plan and how it evolved to what DC is today. Students will go on a walking tour of the National Mall and go to the top of the Washington Monument for a bird’s eye view.  Learn about the founding forefather’s layout of the city and why it is considered to be the most well thought out plan in the country. DC History is rich with architectural influences!

One-day workshops

Classic Architecture Influences in DC Design (Grades 6-8)

Many of DC’s original buildings still stand as a testament to classical architecture. Students will go on a walking tour of Penn Quarter to see examples of Greek and Roman influences. Students will work in groups to build Roman buildings using the principles of classical architecture, and then combine their structures to make a Roman forum.

One and a half-day workshop (3 half days)

Design Your Own Museum (Grades 3-5) in partnership with the National Children’s Museum

After visiting the Children’s Museum, kids get to design their own interactive museum! Kids will use their imaginations to work through the design process and draft an original plan. Collaborate with a partner to brainstorm ideas and provide feedback on final designs, then translate your designs into a 3D model!

Interior Design Challenge: Re-design the Oval Office (Grades 6-8)

This workshop begins at the People’s House for an interactive tour of the White House. Explore the Oval Room with a scavenger hunt. Discover who designed and built the White House, and how it has changed over the years. Then students will plan and re-design the Oval Room for a president in the past, or a president 250 years from now.

Library design (Grades 6-8)

Libraries have always been a rich resource for the community, a refuge for study and education. They can also offer many more things to the public, limited only by the imagination. Learn the fascinating subject of library design for today’s community needs. Students will visit local libraries and then plan, draft and collaborate on library designs.

5 half-days
Animal Habitats (K-5)

Students will create animal habitats, as they learn about different animals and their needs. They will learn about building characteristics such as color, light and texture and how it makes them feel. Ultimately the class will consolidate all their animal habitats into a Hyperion’s Tower, a vertical habitat where students will create spaces for their animals to live in the sky, ground, or underground. We will be touching on concepts of structure, site planning, programming, and other architectural elements and the built environment around us. Trip to the National Zoo is optional.
