Architects and designers are key actors in challenges wrought by the region’s housing shortage, economic insecurity, and a need for design that provides for safer, healthier users within every level of the built environment. During the second of three DesignDC symposia of 2022, AIA|DC aims to arm our members with the latest information surrounding design for equity and a changing economy.

Keynote Speaker:

Bobby Boone, AICP, LEED AP - Founder + Chief Strategist, &Access

With nearly a decade of experience immersed in retail real estate, Bobby is impassioned about empowering engaged tenants, developers, and cities to create community-serving retail. He ensures the viability and sustainability of retail environments with tailored solutions that draw on his market analysis, planning, and strategic merchandising expertise.

Prior to founding &Access, Bobby led a citywide effort to attract and maintain small businesses in Detroit and tackled wide-ranging retail challenges as a senior strategist at Streetsense—from repositioning Fortune 500 brands and malls of yesteryear to crafting expansion strategies for emerging brands and commercial corridors. 

Bobby shares his love of retail with others as a University of Maryland and Harvard University lecturer and speaker at conferences across the nation. He received a Bachelor of Science in architecture from Florida A&M University and a Master of Community Planning from the University of Cincinnati. He holds certifications from the American Institute of Certified Planners and LEED-Neighborhood Development.

Bobby also collaborates with other experts to cater an exchange of knowledge to help shape and grow the industry.

Join us as we announce the winners of the 2022 AIA|DC Chapter Design Awards. This annual competition places special emphasis and recognition on projects that exemplify the 10 Measures of Design Excellence. It's open exclusively to registered architects and invites submissions in four distinct project categories: architecture, interior architecture, historic resources, and urban design/master planning.

The AIA|DC Emerging Architects Committee (EAC) promotes education, leadership development, and community involvement among emerging architects, Associate AIA members, and architects licensed 10 years or less. We encourage the next generation of architects to start leading our community by heading committees, organizing events, participating in workshops, and attending our events.

The EAC has four major objectives: ADVOCATE for emerging architects, PROVOKE and talk about the future of the profession, MENTOR the next generation of architects, and perform OUTREACH to other AIA members, associated disciplines, and the community.
