Sustainability and Liability: Legal Issues and Best Practices

This session will explore best practices and strategies for being a positive driver of environmental progress while avoiding the unique legal pitfalls that arise when trying to affect human behavior and cultivate experiential stewardship to nature and each other through design. Based on ‘lessons learned’ from recent projects, presenters will outline proven techniques for mitigating liability while successfully designing for the environmental and social good.

Seonhee Kim is a Principal and the Sustainability Director at Design Collective in Baltimore, Maryland. Over 20 years at the firm, she administered many LEED-certified projects and consulted numerous others. She is interested in integrating data-informed and experiential design to advance sustainability, building performance, and human behaviors in built environment. She was featured in Architect Magazine, sharing insights on embedding equity in climate solutions. She is a chair of the USGBC Maryland Market Leadership Advisory Board and a member of AIA National COTE Leadership Group.

Paul Knupp is a partner at Lee/Shoemaker, a law firm devoted exclusively to the representation of design professionals. He is immersed in the business of design, defending clients in claim settings and counseling on risk mitigation strategies, contract negotiations, ownership transitions, and all facets of A/E firm operations. Paul is an elected Allied Director of the AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter Board, elected President of the DC Defense Lawyers’ Association, and peer-reviewed Super Lawyer in DC who enjoys regularly sharing legal insights with design professionals through speaking engagements and publications.
