Overview:
The D.C. Department of Energy and Environment’s (DOEE) Green Building Fund provides an annual Building Innovation Design Assistance Grant that supports innovative green building strategies into new or existing building projects in the District. Quinn Evans’s was awarded two of these grants in 2021 to support projects with Net Zero Energy design investigations and Life Cycle assessment of embodied carbon. This session will feature the investigations and outcomes of the DOEE grant work associated with two projects, Hyacinth’s Way and Southeast Neighborhood Library. Hyacinth’s Way is a planned residential property with studio and one-bedroom apartments, community amenities, and support services for formerly homeless men and women over the age of 55. Southeast Neighborhood Library is a historic building that opened in 1922 and is one of three Carnegie-funded libraries in the city.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the funding opportunities available for architects or the design team through the DOEE Green Building Innovation Assistance grant.
- Explain how the innovation grant was able to support strategies that reduced environmental impact of the built environment.
- Understand the methodology used for assessing embodied carbon and net zero strategies via two project case studies.
- Describe how the outcomes of the grant funded energy and carbon investigations will benefit the studied projects and insights that will be helpful to future projects.
