Join AIA|DC and HOK for a tour of Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health, the first freestanding, full-service hospital to be constructed in DC in over 20 years. Located on the historic St. Elizabeths East Campus, it will be fully integrated within a new network of care, with two new urgent care facilities also being constructed in Wards 7 & 8, existing providers, and the George Washington University Hospital to establish a robust system of care for all District residents and in particular, communities East of the River.
Falling under the DC Green Building Act, Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health is required to achieve LEED Silver certification and is pursuing LEED for Healthcare (more stringent than ‘regular’ LEED). The project restores 40% of the site to open and green space, including public park and bioswales for stormwater management, heat island mitigation, biodiversity and resilience. It is designed under DC’s 2017 energy code, including both MEP and enclosure commissioning to optimize energy performance, thermal comfort, indoor air quality and resilience. The current planning includes a ~900 kW solar canopy over the parking deck, which will be funded by DC Solar for All, which will operate as a virtual CREF and provide green power to LMI households in the neighborhood, reducing their utility burden and helping DC meet its decarbonization and equity goals. The hospital campus is designed to be microgrid-ready should this potential become a reality in the future.
