For over thirty years, Neumann Lewis Buchanan Architects has championed the artistry and craftsmanship of traditional architecture. We work from offices in Washington, DC and Middleburg, Virginia with projects throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Our design commissions include wineries in Virginia and Maryland, large estates and smaller houses in rural and urban settings, the restoration of historic buildings and significant additions to period structures.

Our firm has won more than twenty awards for design excellence from the American Institute of Architects. Our projects have been featured in Architectural Digest, Luxe Interiors + Design, Traditional Home, Southern Accents, House Beautiful, Garden Design, Southern Living, Period Homes, Garden & Gun and The Washington Post.  Publications and awards programs have corroborated the timeless attributes of proportion, grace and beauty that are the hallmarks of our work.

By preference, we are a small firm of nine architects. Our size allows each project to be the hands-on responsibility of one of the firm’s partners. We listen carefully to our clients and communicate our ideas clearly. At the core of our design approach is a careful search for the appropriate response to context and our client’s program. With a fluent understanding of the language of historic and vernacular precedents, we create architecture that is both original and familiar. We use natural building materials such as wood, clay, and stone to assure that our homes will withstand the passage of time graciously. Our homes incorporate interior layouts that suit the way people live today, with technology and conveniences artfully integrated.

We consider our most successful projects to be those that appear as if they have always been there.
